Why I help Others To Start Their Own Bike Business

You may be wondering why I give a lot of business information for free on this website - Well after 20 years of working for myself and being the founder of Cycle Tech UK, I like seeing people reach their goals. And the truth is I want people to know anything is possible.
But there is no quick way to success and I have seen many people start and fail with the simplest mistakes. That's why our growing Network of mobile bicycle mechanics can offer a better and effective business start-up programme, with supporting and shearing my 20 years of knowledge of running a mobile repair business...........

Evolution - It's what I love to do, help other mobile bicycle mechanics, start and grow their business, then they can reach more people.

Progress - Collectively if we can help and serve more people, then I reach my mission helping 10 million plus people to cycle more. More people cycling means more happy people, who can improve their health/fitness, cycling is also a great stress reliever, sociable and is also good for the environment.


Deviation - I  could see that this type of business was, and still is a niche business.
I like to be different from normality - By that I mean I have my own mind and started Cycle Tech in 2007 when we were entering economic crises and people who visited my Saturday Bike Clinic was surprised I was doing this full time and being mobile during the week. Back then customers also liked this business idea, even if a little bit surprised and even now I still get comments (Not as many) from passer-by's that this is a great idea not seen that before!!!

Joining Fee:
I do know I could charge more for the service and support I offer - I am happy with the amount, without being greedy or devaluing our brand. It's a fair price and great value for being part of the largest group of mobile bicycle mechanics.

People who contact me about starting their own bike business often say to me "You are not charging enough for what you offer and for your time"

My usual answer "By enjoying what I do and working hard the money will come"
By having lots of money you can not change the world, you can only change yourself and the world around you will change..............

While this is very true - I do feel that we can all help people to better themselves and not to expect anything back. It does feel good knowing we are working together and building a strong network of mobile bicycle mechanics.
Also many of these people I help are also keen to help themselves, build a bike business and then they can offer their skills to help others.

By doing something you enjoy and not what others think you should be doing.
I have also travelled the world and people say why don't you teach English to foreigners? Well first my English is very bad and second I could not be indoors all day, in turn I would not enjoy it and I would not be working to my full potential and the children would not learn as well as someone else teaching. Also there are many people already doing this, so there is no real need for me to be doing something that has little benefit to anyone. BUT happy to have a go, as "nothing ventured nothing gained" taking one step at a time by helping young children learn Saturday mornings.

You learn by life experiences and then we can make our own choices.
I use to work as a car mechanic for a relatively large company with a small group of good working colleagues who also helped each other. Then the company got took over, we had a change of boss, new ways of doing things, with a new bonus scheme and more mechanics joined and had to fit in to our already small workshop.
To continue to earn a good rate of pay, we had to think only of ourselves, that meant not helping each other and being money orientated. While this worked short term, I could not see - it's NOT the way to do things. Until I decided to leave and start my first time as self-employed, by setting up my own business as a mobile car mechanic.

It's like it was meant to happen, form the early days of 2008, people where contacting me and visiting me as they liked what I had built. They also liked our logo/branding and actually thought it was a franchise! But I soon explained that this is not a franchise and I don't intend to make it a franchise. People do think of money first, when in fact many people have tried to make this business a franchise. I feel that while this business is fairly cheap to setup, if you need to pay franchise fee's you will be bust within a year or a very busy fool. Cyclists tend to want to support a local business and that's why our members are not working to a cooperate way of doing things. Even though we do have agreement, it is kept simple to protect each member's area and working to high standards every cyclist expects from a caring bike shop.

There is so much to learn when staring your bike business. Even with years of experience every day you are learning something new
Our network is also a way to have support while building and running your new business. It helps to keep the pressure off and save you time and money. By surrounding yourself with people who are positive thinkers, successful and proactive will do wonders for you and your business.

Your van. It's the most important piece of gear you can bring with you to do on site repairs. It's not just any old van, it's one that is designed to go the distance.
If you've never been a mobile mechanic before, it can be hard to know how to pick out the right one. 

You might have dreams to start a mobile bike shop, working from a van that offers all the types of service and repairs at customs home, place of work or from one location.

Your budget might be hindering your goals, That's ok as we believe you will still get there.

1. Choosing the right van

For pickup and delivery service ONLY:
A van that you can store a minimum of 6 bicycle while in transit. Time is money and you need to be productive and efficient in you collection and delivery with your customers bicycles. Its not unusual to arrive at a customers house to pick up a bike and they have 4 bikes and the next door neighbour asks can you service their bikes!
  • Renault traffic, Nissan Primastar, Vauxhall Vivaro, Ford Transit custom (short wheel base)
For MOBILE service, repairs and event support:
The Mobile Bicycle Workshop - Where you will have a fully kitted workshop and parts store kitted in the back of a van, without compromise or forget it. This will be your biggest expense, so get it right as it is the only way to run your mobile business efficiently.
My choice: the Renault Master, as is low to the ground, good head room and more space then the Transit.
  • The minimum size - Ford transit long wheel base high top, Renault Master medium wheel base, Peugeot Boxer medium wheel base.
  • Full size - Renault Master & Peugeot Boxer Long wheel base, Mercedes sprinter & VW Crafter long wheel base.

2. Buy new, used or lease
  • Buy new or lease is great for minimal mechanical problems, reliable and looks professional. If you are going to be VAT registered, then it makes sense buying new or leasing.
  • Buying used is always a risk and takes time to find the right van. Buying with no VAT is not always easy to find buying from a trader, so look for private sales. Vauxhall Vivaro type vans for pickup of bicycles ONLY can be brought from Ex BT, also check out auctions for a good deal of ex lease vans that have been serviced. like anything take a mechanic with you for inspection and read our GUIDE 
  • Once you get your used van back home, it will need a service & *cambelt change. *If requierd
3. Kit your van out
  • Choose your layout - Being organised, tool and parts storage. View racking systems HERE

Guide Yourself To Run Your Own Mobile Bike Business

What I have found with running my own highly successful business, is that you can't do it alone. I don't mean that you need to employ people, but you need people as your customers. Without them there is no business.

Q. What does it mean to you - To be successful in business?

A. Success means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Money? Power? Fame?  I ask to try to help us understand why we do what we do….
  • You have become a legend in the cycle community. Customers who are happy with your work, they return and tell their friends.
  • You have time to do the things you want (More time for cycling)
  • You are able to help other reach their success.
Q. How will you achieve this? Do we ever reach this?

A. Maybe just maybe its taking small steps and/or being successful each and everyday by having the ability to enjoy what we do and being grateful.  

People often say; I don't want to be rich, I just want to be comfortable. To get rich or to be successful, you need to get uncomfortable to make things happen. If you don't change you will keep producing the same out come.

Learn to Organise and Manage Situations

The two most powerful words:
That will make or brake you "I AM"
I AM the greatest, I AM good at what I do, I AM happy, I AM..........
Or I AM stupid, I AM not cleaver, I AM sad, I AM ........
Tell yourself; I can do that or I could do that. And NOT I should do that.

We all make mistakes, that's how we learn. You could say you have failed! But by saying I have a situation. This will make it easier to deal with each mistake. It's how to deal with your mistakes that make's the difference between success and fail. You are always learning and becoming more organised to deal with your business and everyday life issues.
If you are the type of person who keep's starting something new and never finishes, then you need to look at yourself first, at what can you do to change, so you complete what you really should be doing.

The Bicycle Shed - For Business

Get it right and this could be the perfect job - working from home fixing bikes in a shed.

Some more things to think about or plan before setting up your mobile bicycle business.
I have talked a lot about the mobile workshop and having a LARGE van on this Blog. As a full time business offering a high level of service, it will only be a matter of time before you will need a shed as your business grows to store parts, bikes and to work from occasionally.
  • The shed (Workshop/garage) - size and location
  • Pricing - One of the hardest things in any business to get right.
  • Customers - Keep them close but remember you are running a business!

The Bicycle Shed

The Shed:
The size will depend how you plan to operate your business now and in the future.
  • Running your mobile business from the van 100% of the time can be done, as long as your van is LARGE enough for you to carry all your tools, stock and able to work inside in the winter time. You will need an extra long-wheel base van to achieve this. You will also need a drive/packing space at home for security.
  • You will need a shed so you can also work from when needed - If your business plan is to setup clinics at a set location one or two times a week, then you will soon have bikes that will need taking away as you don't have time or parts to finish all the work.
  • A shed with easy access - Ideally where you can back your van up to the shed doors and able to move bikes, tools and parts to and from easily.
  • The shed size - minimum size 10ft x 8 x 7 high. Even at this size you will have limitations, ideally a shed from 20ft x 16 x 8, to have a workbench, bike storage, parts storage, area for degreaser and large enough space to work.
  • Work space - You will need an area to do office work - look up parts on laptop, write invoices and to package goods for returns or maybe what you sell online. As well as area to fix bikes in, that needs to be clear, clean and tidy where you can put small parts down and have tools close by. A parts washer or cleaning bay to degrease and clean each bike you are working on.
  • Storing bikes - Hooks screwed in to the joist to hang bikes from the wheel, to give you more space and stop bikes from being damaged.
  • Security - You will have a large value of stock, tools and customers bikes! Door Lock that is bolted to the floor, no windows (Not like the photo above) or windows with bars. Lock for each bicycle that is kept in your shed.
  • If you don't have a drive for your van or a garage for a workshop and no space to build a shed, then you need to think about renting a workshop and base yourself there. Don't think you can setup a business working from your front room and offer a professional service - being organised is key to this type of business.

Pricing:
This is one of the hardest things to get right in any business, not just when setting up but every year you need to review your pricing and make sure you are charging what you are worth - tools, training, van, investment and your time.
Also you need to charge for travel - picking up/dropping off and going to a job as a mobile repair that is more then 5 miles away. Read more about pricing

Customers:
Cyclists like our mobile service, as it is convenient and saves them time.
It is also good to work and talk direct to the customer, but you need to also keep them at arm's length from your working area. You don't want the customer telling you how to do your job! Have a booking system and use it with every customer. As a Cycle Tech UK mechanic we can't give a price to any bike repair till we have seen it and that go's for diagnosing a fault/problem until it's been though our system and the bike has been fully inspected.
As with pricing above customers may buy parts online and ask you to fit (Be ready to know how much you will charge for fitting and that there is or is not any guarantee with your workmanship fitting those parts) or they have had a go already fixing their bike and not told you............................
