When you want to be successful in life, you got to study people who are at their best in their profession.

Too often you see people setup a business from the back of a car and expect results.
As with any business you need to start somewhere, but first;
  • You should ask yourself what type of business you want and then study those businesses.
  • You have to study their methods and then plan how you are going to work like them. 
The Casual Business;
A business that may only run on a part-time basis. A small operation, with few tools and some basic parts that can offer a limited service to only a few customers. For those who wish to work to a budget and don't want to make a living from or for those who want to do their bit for the environment and work from a bike & trailer.
A business start-up from the back of a car may be tempting, but immediately it presents an unprofessional approach to potential customers. However, with a competent business plan and network support, you can start a professional full time business from a large mobile workshop.

The Professional Business;
A full time branded business, would operate from a fully equipped mobile service unit, working at least 5 1/2 days a week. The Professional Business offers a comprehensive, reliable service, repairs to a wide range of customers at their home or place of work and offering support to large national events as well as to local charity events. The Professional is able to charge a competitive job rate and is known by offering a quality service.

This was my second van back in Jan 2009, just 6 months after starting my new business. I soon found out I needed a larger one. This mobile unit can operate at customers home, place of work, bike clinics and events.

  • Parts; Which spares supplier, what price/discounts will you benefit from, stockholding required, how will you manage stock control?
  • Tools & Training; Which tools will you need, what training, where will you find technical support?
  • Storage; How will you store your tools, stock, display area and security?
  • Customers; How will customers find you, how will you be known, type of customers, their needs & types of bikes you will work on, why customers will want to purchase your products and services and not those of your competitors? Marketing plan; How will you attract and retain enough customers to make a profit? What methods will you use to capture your audience? What sets your business apart from the competition?
  • Strengths and Weaknesses; Can you make quick decisions, what skills do you already have and how can you differentiate your business?
  • Branding; Can secure long term trust, how will you secure this?
  • Pricing; What charges will you apply per hour/job. Will you need to offer any discount? Consider your competitiveness vs the competition (shops etc.,)
  • Start date; Once you have establish a competent business plan and you have your finances in place when do you wish to start your business?
