Why Cycle Tech UK Is NOT A Franchise

People often associate Cycle Tech UK as a franchise as it looks like a franchise, with its branding & national coverage.
In the long term Cycle Tech UK has built this image with its business name on loyalty & support from its Members.

"It's not all about the money" But businessmen will tell you different! Of course you will need to make a living, but if you enjoy what you are doing and offer a great service the money will come!

Working as a network we can achieve that no one can achieve alone!

Cycle Tech UK Is Different
Our Members support each other and are very passionate in what they do.

Cycle Tech UK works because its a cooperative, similar to a franchise without the high fee's associated with a franchise, enabling each mechanic to grow their business successfully. Cycle Tech UK is a large network of independent businesses, that have been supporting each other since 2008. It's helped us get known to the trade for opening trade accounts and our name of trust to the public nationally.

Mobile Bicycle Mechanic Business - Van & Storage

Buying the right van for your business needs, is the first decision you need to take very seriously.

The mobile workshop is the image of your business, as-well your workshop. That's going to be professional, to tackle all those jobs!

The best advice is; "get the biggest van you can afford" or you will find you soon need to replace it for a bigger one.

Cycle Tech UK Mobile Bicycle Mechanic Businesses.
The Mobile Workshop
What to think about when planning the layout of your van. Basically a bikeshop in the back of a van. For a mobile business:
  • Your working area; do you plan on working inside your van, from the side or from the back? If working inside; then you may conceder a box type van or a van with square sides to maximize your working area. Like a Peugeot boxer. (Its not unusual to have a fleet of 5 or more bikes to work on at any one visit)
  • Cleaning area for parts/bikes.
  • Storage of your tools, for easy to find & workbench or folding table for stripping down parts and vice.
  • Storage of stock; wheels and tyres, small parts, chains & cassettes, chainsets, derailleurs....
  • Storage of bikes; Bikes that will be taken away to work on and then returned.
  • Display area; for selling accessories, pumps, locks, lights, tyres at cycle events as well as working onsite where customers can view.
  • What will be your main place of work, at customers home/place of work, events, Dr Bike, onsite corporate work, schools?
  • Electrics; lighting, phone charger,
  • Insulation; keeping your stock dry in the cold damp months.
  • Security; alarm, dead locks
  • Awning; for working from the side, with protection from rain and strong sunlight.
  • Sign writing; your van is one of your main ways of advertising.

Working from the side of the van. Tools and workshop parts close by. Parts & accessories on display

Professional Business Vs Non Professional

What kind of business will you operate?

When you want to be successful in life, you got to study people who are at their best in their profession.
Casual Vs Professional
Too often you see people setup a business from the back of a car and expect results.
As with any business you need to start somewhere, but first;
  • You should ask yourself what type of business you want and then study those businesses.
  • You have to study their methods and then plan how you are going to work like them.
The Casual Business;
A business that may only run on a part-time basis. A small operation, with few tools and some basic parts that can offer a limited service to only a few customers. For those who wish to work to a budget and don't want to make a living from or for those who want to do their bit for the environment and work from a bike & trailer.
A business start-up from the back of a car may be tempting, but immediately it presents an unprofessional approach to potential customers. However, with a competent business plan and network support, you can start a professional full time business from a large mobile workshop.

The Professional Business;
A full time branded business, would operate from a fully equipped mobile service unit, working at least 5 1/2 days a week. The Professional Business offers a comprehensive, reliable service, repairs to a wide range of customers at their home or place of work and offering support to large national events as well as to local charity events. The Professional is able to charge a competitive job rate and is known by offering a quality service.

Mobile Bicycle Workshop Operation in 2009
This was my second van back in Jan 2009, just 6 months after starting my new business. I soon found out I needed a larger one. This mobile unit can operate at customers home, place of work, bike clinics and events.
The mobile bicycle workshop, has a complete tool kit to undertake 99% of jobs onsite, display area at the rear, work is carried outside, with two folding work-stands and bench. A awning to protect from rain and strong sun.
I have learnt a lot in the last 8 years and how to continue to grow my business. You can start today, by putting a business plan together...........
Business Plan

There are amazing benefits from incorporating a plan into your business. Whether you're starting a new business or a professional mechanic looking to improve their business.
To start a business and make it grow, here are some points to think about that you should add in your business plan. Start by researching the following:
  • Your basic business concept; The industry, your business structure, your particular product or service, and how you plan to make your business a success?
  • Your strategy; The specific actions you plan to take to implement it. What goals do you have for your business? When and how will you reach your goals? Where do you want your business to be in 1, 3 & 5 year's time?
  • Capital; Investigate how you intend to raise the money to start your business, the amount you will need to start your business & the amount you will need each month to run your business and to cover your private living expenses?
  • Location; Establish your working location, the size of your work area, your mode of transport, likely demand for a mobile business in your area?
  • Size of your mobile workshop; Large enough to carry your tools, stock and any bikes for further repair, will you work inside the van or not?
  • Time; The organisation of your day to day operation, booking in jobs, ordering parts/stock control/invoice payment, keeping customers up-to date, jobs in progress?
  • Parts; Which spares supplier, what price/discounts will you benefit from, stockholding required, how will you manage stock control?
  • Tools & Training; Which tools will you need, what training, where will you find technical support?
  • Storage; How will you store your tools, stock, display area and security?
  • Customers; How will customers find you, how will you be known, type of customers, their needs & types of bikes you will work on, why customers will want to purchase your products and services and not those of your competitors? Marketing plan; How will you attract and retain enough customers to make a profit? What methods will you use to capture your audience? What sets your business apart from the competition?
  • Strengths and Weaknesses; Can you make quick decisions, what skills do you already have and how can you differentiate your business?
  • Branding; Can secure long term trust, how will you secure this?
  • Pricing; What charges will you apply per hour/job. Will you need to offer any discount? Consider your competitiveness vs the competition (shops etc.,)
  • Start date; Once you have establish a competent business plan and you have your finances in place when do you wish to start your business?
These questions and more can be answered in a meeting or Skype chat.
If you want the freedom of being your own boss but with the support of a national network, working in one of the fastest growing leisure sectors please do get in touch with Martin Wilkins at for an information brochure.

Business Profile: Cycle Tech Bournemouth
Start of business 1st May 2015
Entrepreneur and Cycle Tech UK Member Andrew Downton has many years engineer experience, keen triathlon cyclist and is a cycling coach.
Vehicle "The Mobile Workshop" has been leased to help spread setup costs & is fully Cycle Tech UK branded.
With Andrews cycling background has paved the way for attending cycling events and reaching out to those customers with mid to high end road bikes. Andrew is a keen member of Cycle Tech UK, he gets active in our group support, networks with other members and has spent a day with me getting his hands dirty and talking shop. Before leaving his full time job, he planed & prepaired his business setup by; kitting out his van, advertising with local cycling clubs, working on friends bikes, buying tools and stock. He set himself a date to start full time and handed his notice in at his full time employment to start Cycle Tech Bournemouth. "Andrew has become a credit to our group"

  • Cycle Tech UK Partnership offer the first “Network of mobile bicycle mechanics” on site service for all types of bikes; mountain, road, hybrid, touring, tandems, trikes, recumbent and even electric bikes.
  • Each mobile workshop is a one-stop shop for all  maintenance needs - gear tune, tyres, wheels, brakes, drive chain & service intervals.
  • This business opportunity is poised to help you capitalise on these trends with only a small investment.
  • Cycle Tech UK Est 2007 with over 40 members across the UK

The Industry
Today’s cyclists are better educated and earn considerably more than the national average. They love to ride, they don’t service their own bikes and these RUCs "Rich Urban Cyclists" & MAMIL "Middle Age Men In Lycra" hate to miss a ride because they have to leave their bike several days at the bikeshop for simple gear adjustment and brake service.

Buyer Profile
Understanding the “Cyclist Mentality” is important. Our Members understand: “It’s All About the Ride.” Offering the very best advice, customer care and of course bike service second to none.
"Look for problems before the customer finds it"

Job Description
Advertise to cyclists, network with local clubs, cycling events and promote charity rides explaining the benefits of a mobile service. Mobile bicycle repair workshop is a specialist on-site service offering maintenance & service to all makes of bicycles, tyres & tubes, gear and brake services, wheel truing. Manage day to day of your business; booking in jobs, oversee inventory (stock control & trade parts orders), marketing and finances.

Seeking Members
Nationwide who are willing to use our branding, working full time and work from a large mobile workshop.

Initial Investment Outlay
You should be looking at £15 - £25k Figures vary as it can depend on your setup; with buying or leasing your the mobile workshop, (A new fully fitted out van) or buy used and then new when business takes off, being VAT registered, sole trader or Limited company and whether you need to borrow any money to fund your start-up with have an impact on costs. There is obviously a big difference with a mobile business rather than a bikeshop/workshop based one. And of course there are no high franchise fees!

How much can I earn?
Realistically, you might expect to earn around £40,000 after a couple of years as a Cycle Tech UK Partner. But how much you actually make depends on how skilled you are at customer satisfaction. Of course the initial advertising and leaflet drops are important but regular work from long standing customers will be the most lucrative. Location will also make a difference, how quickly you gain knowledge (in mechanics and business), confidence and become known for your workmanship. Stock investment, stock control and having trade suppliers for the best deals. Along with a mark-up on trade prices, it will only take a short time to profit from. But some of that profit will need to be put back to buy more stock, so you have the right parts in stock, that will allow you a fast turn around with jobs being completed on the same day. And work very hard, of course – this is not money for nothing.

Who is it suited to?
The member will need to have some mechanical experience – although Cycle Tech UK doesn’t specify this requirement, as we require all our members to undergo the level 2 training. But those people that tend to have technical experience, if not necessarily mechanical experience and have worked for a company that has a system of professionalism and customer care will do better as they are use to working to a very high standard and can organise themselves to make the working environment more efficient without compromising quality. Our two desk job type people have also worked out and have become successful. Anyone with hands on experience will have the best chance and if you have enough interest and an aptitude for knowing how things work at a DIY level, you might find yourself enjoying the different challenge a mobile bike business brings.

By building your business is the smart move
Working with our network company, will allow your business to gain skills and time to make money and all at a low setup cost. Also you own the business unlike a franchise with the ability to control your own destiny. Our proven system will show you how to start and run your business and to get best use from our network.
Putting your money in the bank to save, is designed to loose value, where investing in your own business will give you a monthly payment and long term future investment. It's all down to your values and whether you take calculated risks. Why study at school to work hard for a cooperate business that you will never own?
There is no get rich quick scheme to make money overnight, it takes time. And if this is your first time as a business owner, it will be a big step with the transition from an employee. There are 2 types of people you will hear from, those who will tell you "you won't make it" and those who say "go for it". Cycle tech UK will help and support you for as long as it takes.

Tips for success
  • Every bicycle needs looking at some time in its life and this isn’t likely to change. People also have busy life styles and don't have time to take their bike to the shop and that isn't likely to change either. However, you still need to approach the business in a realistic manner.
  • There will always be someone trying to undercut you so it’s important to be good at your job. If you offer a good service people will come back and will recommend you to their friends.
  • Work won’t roll in automatically. There can be some seasonal variation until you are established. So work to get referrals as well as constant new businesses.
  • If you do a good on-the-spot repair and can also offer bike builds, frame swaps, tyre change and servicing, there is a good chance the customer will call you back when these need doing again.
  • Good relations with potential customers are also important and new potential clients are always better wooed face to face.
  • In addition, a recognised brand name will help members to attract customers, as people will already know what the company has to offer. Our branding on our van's generate the most work, you will find its essential in your business start up for gaining enquiries.
  • Offering advice for free, but don't be a busy fool, charge for your time, knowledge, skills and tools.
  • Make sure you get a designated area to work in. Research the area thoroughly – there is always going to be competition but if you start off near already established mid to high end bikeshops, you will be giving yourself a better chance to succeed as cyclists will be riding quality bikes and not willing to wait up to 4 weeks to have them serviced.
  • Talk to people who are already on the ground. And concentrate more on the newer members rather than the older ones. These are the people who will remember which were the best – and worst – decisions they made at the beginning and could be your most useful source.
  • Customer care is also of the utmost importance. People are extremely protective of their bicycles, often seeing them as an extension of themselves. You must treat them that way too. If you send a bike out covered in greasy handprints, un-repaired faults or without reporting any of the faults you may have missed or did not recommend, that customer is unlikely to come back.
Much like the freedom a cyclists, our members are independent and who want to become their own boss. Cycle Tech UK offers that opportunity, though it also requires flexibility, hard work and an ability to follow proven strategies for success. For the right person, "unlike a franchisee" our network of mobile bicycle mechanics can give each member the freedom to run their own business, and yet have the support of successful business practices to back it up.

A happy business makes a successful business
There are many benefits to owning a Cycle Tech UK Partnership. Perhaps one of the biggest is having a strategic partner with the resources and brand recognition that attracts and retains customers. Investing in Cycle Tech UK strengthens our brand while giving the member proven strategies for marketing, distribution and an overall successful way of doing business.

Your Work Purpose

When I am asked by someone new, I have just met or introduced to; what do you do?

You can now find your true work purpose and it will fundamentally change your life for the better.
Cycle Tech UK Members are already doing this.
You will soon find you are making a more positive contribution to the cycling world around us.

Cyclists come from all walks of life, they ride different types of bikes and they may only ride once a year or everyday.
But they all have one thing in common; Once people get involved with cycling, they are eager to share their passion.

Cycle Tech UK Ltd can give you a clear purpose, where you can make a valuable contribution to your society.

It still means hard-work, but you feel rewarded by constantly having a hunger for learning something new and knowing you have helped someone.

Use Bicycle Trade Suppliers Or The Likes Of Chainreaction and Wiggle?

With most industries nowadays, it's become harder for trade suppliers to match online price's, let alone be cheaper.

Using a trade supplier does not always mean buying cheaper.

Most independent Bike Shops and Mobile businesses use a mixture of trade to buy stock and Chain Reaction Cycles/online retailers to buy one off small orders to help with margins and to maximize profit.

Many B2B and online sales websites have baskets you can add items to, making it easy for stock ordering and some suppliers will match online prices and give an extra 5% off.

"It do's not seem right using non trade suppliers and I do still believe buying from trade suppliers"

Shimano Parts & Accessories on display - Mobile setup (Photo 2011)

Chain Reaction Cycles CRC
Wiggle and Chainreaction Cycles now known as "Chiggle"
  • Can beat most (But not all) trade prices with no minimum order
  • Offer free delivery that usually comes next day
  • Have help line and support
  • Easy returns from collect Plus and free returns on orders over £9
  • Can pass on price difference by charging RRP (Min 30%)
  • Choice of delivery address
  • Easy to return parts for refund or exchange due to failure/warranty
The only downside is credit is not given, so if you are buying large amounts of parts, you will need a cash flow to cover costs until customer collects and pays.

Trade suppliers

  • Rep's don't help - they are mainly salesman working to a target. Be-wary to let them in your shop, they are not helping your business, by giving the wrong advise what you should be stocking. Do try and build a relationship from the start, by letting them know what your business is about and that you are working to a budget and need fast moving stock to make a return. Why do you need to stock clothing, kids bikes, etc.........?????
  • Have minimum orders for free delivery from £100 - £200
  • Easy to buy things not required to make up free delivery - better off paying £5 delivery charge (Do use the basket to put in stock items, that will make up the order)
  • Do not stock everything - Can be out of stock and then not able to make up your order for free delivery
  • Paying post for returning any parts
  • Trade suppliers can be out of stock as they supply to the big online bikeshops!
  • Trade suppliers do have great product knowledge, with years of experience
  • Help with looking up those hard to find parts saving you time
  • Many specialist parts are cheaper
  • Give credit
  • We work closely with our suppliers for the best buying deals, with premier rates with some trade discounts suppliers. And bulk buying deals for Cycle Tech Group
  • There are many that do support the small businessman
  • Huge discounts on tools
  • Build a relationship
  • News letters with special offers on every day parts
  • Many distributors invest into promoting cycling

Group bulk buying stock direct from the trade supplier

You need self discipline:

Many bikeshops and mobile businesses are carrying less stock than in the past and using the supplier as the warehouse. (Due mainly to not over stocking, too many variations, next day)  By keeping only fast moving bread and butter parts and accessories in stock. The downside is parts when required maybe out of stock, with a back order of over 2 months.
This type of business like many others, have a very busy period followed by quite times. Giving a misconception, which is all too easy to spend on buying large amounts of stock and bikes when busy and be left with a lot of money on the shelf or invoices that need paying at the end of the month. Finding a balance of how you are running your shop over the whole year and forecasting what's required.

As I say a lot on here - make notes, take small steps, do one thing at a time and act on it!!!

Don't know what to stock, where to buy from, stock control? Then I can help you.

As Cycle Tech UK is not a franchise and this allows each business to be independent working under a national brand. Cycle Tech UK The Bicycle Workshop - Bike Shop

If you are thinking of opening your own Bike Shop Then there are something's to think about.

Some of our mobile mechanics have done just that, after just 2 years running their own mobile business have decided that a Workshops/Bike Shops is the way forward.

What makes them successful?
The main reason is knowledge, they say after 3 years of trading ,they would have done things differently in the beginning, if only they knew!

There is a lot to learn before your shop will become successful. But before you even open a bike shop, you should have put a plan together. To include, Shop location, size, layout, monthly outgoings, Stock list of parts & accessories, stock of bikes, trade suppliers, insurance, security, marketing and employee's. You may like to read Setting-up a bike business

Both Cycle Tech Eastbourne &
Cycle Tech Snowdonia have both opened bike shops after running as a mobile outfit.

Knowing what bikes your customers will buy

Sales of bikes

£250 hybrids or £3000 plus carbon road bikes? Will it be down to the colour , will you have the right size in stock, can you order from your supplier next day? It will mean a lot of money tied up on the showroom floor. Price Range £300-2,000 is the price range to aim for.
At the end of the day bike sales will rely on getting people in the shop, having bikes outside your shop and the amount of passers by it draws into the shop is remarkable.
Bike sales change each week and season, you don't need to stock every size bike.

What to charge?
Labour for bike repairs; Bike shops charge on average £35 - £45/hour including VAT and have a minimum of 30% mark-up on parts.
VAT Reg?
If you sell cycles your turn over will increase, also you can claim vat back on your stock and van. You can also sell cycles on the cycle to work scheme. Remember you will need to stock a number of bicycle to sell one.
If you stock it will you sell it?

Epos system – to manage stock, bikes and booking in jobs. Also linked to trade suppliers stock.
Its easy to buy too much of the wrong items that only sell twice a year and then it may go out of date.
Knowledge of what to stock is key to your success, Cycle Tech UK supply a stock list and a list of trade suppliers to its Members.
EPoS stands for Electronic Point of Sale. They can be used as a replacement for the old fashioned cash register, and can greatly improve the efficiency of your business.
The software used with EPoS systems is capable of a wide range of tasks that include monitoring stock, weighing items, taking payments for products, and keeping track of what has been sold and by whom. This allows you to keep better track of what's going on in your business, which will lead to better productivity and staff performance. An EPoS system helps your customers too, by reducing the amount of queues.
Specialise in the best on EPoS systems for you - Is Citrus - Lime
With an EPoS system, you'll get the following benefits:
  • A system that can monitor the transactions made by your business. What's been sold, how much stock there is, and who's sold what.
  • More functionality than the traditional cash register, a must for any business seeking to keep themselves modern and in the know.
  • A high degree of integration, meaning all your different machines can communicate with each other and work together better.
  • The ability to make use of touch screens and other technology that can reduce the amount of queues in your stores.
 Stock control using EPos

Customer care and decision making
The key is trust and the customer feeling comfortable in your shop. Along with your knowledge and decision making.
  • You will need to keep a balance of workmanship/customer care Between being a busy fool and not getting angry with customers.
  • Every job you take on is individual to the bike and customers needs

Location location is key to the success of your bike shop but in the bike trade, if a shop 20 miles away is selling a top brand, the chances are you won't be-able to sell it! Do your research with local shops and suppliers.

Will your bike shop be big enough, to stock new bikes, show products and have room for repairs.

Turnover & Expenses

Running a bike shop you will have bigger bills to pay each month, where's a mobile mechanic will have a much lower running costs and will probably make money in his first year where's a bike shop could take 4 years to make any profit. You will have to work longer hours to cover costs and more worry in the quite winter months until you become known.
Can you afford to employ a mechanic?

Its down to you to make your business work. They say in the bike trade, to make a million £££'s you need to invest 2 million!
